Crown Heights, Then and Now

The New Utrecht documentary team investigates the events surrounding the Crown Heights riots, which occurred twenty years ago this year. They discover that the Brooklyn College Community Partnership was founded in part as a response to the violence, to promote inter-cultural understanding and peace, and to create dialogue within a community full of tension.

Bowling Fun!

The New Utrecht Project Peace team goes bowing at Maple Lanes! For some, it was our first time. It was challenging, but still fun. Others were more experienced and bowled like champs. All in all, we had a great time!

Hold My Hand

New Utrecht High School’s Project Peace Video Club walked around Besonhurst and Flatbush and filmed moments of beauty and random acts of kindness- people holding hands, hugging, laughing and helping each other out. Here is a video montage of those moments and some memories from this past year.

Sunset Park Senior Center

Some of our students visited Sunset Park Senior Center to help out for the day. We prepared lunch, served the seniors, and were on dish duty! The best part of the day was hearing the stories they had to tell. It was a fun day for both the students and the seniors.

Ian’s Truck Farm Comes to New Utrecht!

Ian Cheney from Wicked Delicate came to visit NU to show us his incredible truck farm! Instead of throwing away his grandfather’s old truck, he decided to make a moving farm out of it. He has made a documentary film about his exploits and drives around the city educating people on the benefits of organic farming, including better tasting food, saving money, and not wasting food. And, it’s not as hard as it looks! When asked if anyone had ever stolen anything from the truck, he said, yes, a plant. But it was returned the following week! Find out more at www.truck-farm.com. Bon appetite!

Ian pulls up in his truck farm.

He even has plants in his front seat.

Ian explains to students about the benefits of growing your own food.

It's a jungle in there. While his truck is parked in the urban jungle, people have been adding their own additions to the truck farm, including many toy animals, including this tiger. Roaaar!

The students choose the plants they want to grow, lemon basil or carrot?

Everyone now has their own seeds to sow.

CUPS comes to New Utrecht!

For the past couple of weeks, Mads and Monique from the Center for Urban Pedagogy has been visiting the BCCP @ New Utrecht. We visited three local stores, a barbershop, a 99 cent store, and a florist and asked the shop owners about the history of the store as well as some of their favorite memories. The students then made projects based on these interviews in order to place them back into the stores for an art intervention. It was a great opportunity for both the students as well as the shop owners to get to know one another better, as well as contribute in a creative way back to the neighborhood of Bensonhurst. We all had a blast and learned a lot about the changing neighborhood. The shop owners were all very touched by the projects that the students made for them and they said now this experience must be added to their list of favorite memories!

Behind the Scenes on the Set of “Crown Heights, Then and Now”

The sound and camera team, Susan and Elie!

2011 marks the 20 year anniversary of the Crown Heights Riots. The New Utrecht documentary team went back to Crown Heights to interview some of the residents to see how the neighborhood has changed since then. Here’s a behind the scenes look at the upcoming documentary, coming soon!

We braved the chilly weather to get our interviews!

The frist person we interviewed for the documentary remembered the riots well and gave us good first hand accounts of what happened.

The documentary team asked some diffucult questions such as, "Do you think race relations has changed since the riots?" But Dovid answered candidly and with great depth. He said he was only 2 years old at the time, but the aftermath of the riots and the racial tension still lingers in the neighborhood.

We happened to run into someone coming from the peer mediation center who had just come from a meeting about the 20 year anniversary of the riots~ what a coincidence!

Brooklyn College Visit

In recent weeks, we have visited Brooklyn College a few times to engage in different activities, such as Dress For Success event at BCAL and to spend some time playing video games at the Student Center (SUBO). Here are some of the pictures from the trips.

Photo Booth

We were inspired by Gillian Wearing’s series entitled Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You To Say. In this series, Wearing approached strangers on the street and asked them to express themselves through words written on a sign. The New Utrecht Video Club took to the same task and came up with their own messages, some funny, some serious, and many inspiring.

We also practiced our acting skills. Each pair was given a scenario to act out through facial expressions and gestures. Here is a sampling of scenarios from our aspiring young actors.

The President just called you.

You just won the Coney Island hot dog eating contest.

You just won the lottery!

You're on a cross country trip.

You're on the cover of men's Vogue.

You're rappers!
